View on China
Most economists believe China's economy will continue to slow in 2014 and most of our respondents tend to share this same view. But this is not to say they are pessimistic about 2014. Quite the opposite, more than 50% of survey participants are looking forward to grow their top line by more than 20% in the next year, with sentiment on improved margins decidedly positive.

Geert's comments:
Most people who have been in China for a long time continue to believe in the possibilities that China has to offer. The Moore Stephens survey confirms that opportunities and challenges go hand-in-hand and that cautious implementation of a China strategy is paramount. Some of my beliefs still hold:

1. The growing middle class in China offers tremendous opportunities – not only because of their massive number (more than 300 million to come in the next years) – but also because of their growing quest for reliable quality. Too much troubles from 'cheap China stuff' have been around. It is time – also for Western companies – to focus again on durable and reliable quality products and services. Give it your best effort.

2. Innovation towards the taste and demand of the Chinese consumer will be key. You can no longer consider China as the work factory for the world. Growing levels of automation, more breakthroughs in services, e-commerce as a new market model, shorter time-to-market product introductions, ... Just a few examples of how you can win in China.

3. And lastly ... it is all about people. I believe that the days of expats running the show in China, are over. It will be Chinese leaders who can best judge and act in this volatile and fast-paced market. Do you have your Chinese leadership team in place already?

Recently some companies are leaving China. If you have a similar hop-on/hop-off view on China, then indeed it might be too much for you to stay in China. Declining market share, fierce competitors, crisis mode, labor cost on the rise, … all the more reasons for a fierce debate on whether China is the place for you. But where are the alternatives? You want to be in Bangladesh with a textile company? You need to bring products in or out of India through the bureaucratic red tape? Is the Vietnam cost evolution also not growing at rocket speed? In other words, China still has a lot of comfort to offer, not in the least a vast internal market.
And don't worry: China has been in a crisis mode for the last 50 years and will continue to be for another 50!
If you have a solid China strategy, if your belief in a China future remains strong, then also you will be able to overcome the hurdles.
Shortage in talent, rising costs, copy-cats, just to name a few – all can be tackled if you stand firm alongside your Chinese leadership team in the next 50 years.

• 1 April 2014: Keynote speech given by H.E. Mr. Xi Jinping – Concert Hall, Bruges (Belgium).

"The Chinese Dream", the - by now - famous saying of Mr. Xi Jinping: And how Belgium, Belgian companies and Belgian people can contribute to this : not only investments in technology or factories, but also in innovation, in knowledge contribution in social matters (pension schemes, senior homes, ...), in environmental and food preservation methods, but also in cross cultural bonding. People with dual background and citizenship are true ambassadors of this win-win thinking and will be instrumental in realizing this Chinese Dream.
